ART IN PHOTOGRAPHY

MR. GEORGE CHANCE'S WORK

A very fine exhibition of photographs, chiefly of New Zealand scenery, by Mr. George Chance, of Dunedin, was opened yesterday in the clubrooms of the Auckland Society of Arts. The work of Mr. Chance, who is a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, has won high praise at exhibitions in many countries. The present collection shows that he has ovorcome one of the greatest difficulties that the artist photographer in Now Zealand has to meet—the conveying of atmospheric effect. His prints, which have a rich softness without too great loss of detail, reveal a true grasp of composition and a fine sense ol tone-values. Most of tho New Zealand scenes .ire among the mountains and farm lands of tho South Island. Mr. Chance is extraordinarily successful with trees, particularly bluegums, poplars and willows. He also has an unfailing eye for beauty in the curve of a coastline, and his studies of alps and lakes aro no less remarkable. The collection also includes studies of picturesque old English villages and a few scenes in Japan and Fiji.
