ABUSE OF PROBATION

FINAL CHANCE GIVEN

MAGISTRATE WARNS YOUNG MAN

A charge of failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation was admitted by Hugh Champion, aged 21, salesman, in the Police Court on Saturday. Evidence was given by the probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, that on August 23 last accused was convicted on a charge of attempting to obtain money by a false pretence and was placed on probation for two years. He had not complied with the terms of his releaasc and had reported only oncc. In asking for leniency, counsel for the defence, Mr. Milne, said that accused had not reported regularly as be bad been in North Auckland on business. Before leaving the city, however, accused requested his father to see the probation officer and explain the position to him. Unfortunately the father was taken ill and was unable to visit Mr. Campbell. Accused's father gave evidence that lie had done all lie could for his son. Had lie not been ill he would have seen the probation officer without delay. The magistrate, Mr. W. It. McKean (to witness): Isn't your son able to write? There is such a thing as a post office, you know. It was (stated by the probation officer and Detective-Sergeant Doyle that accused's father was a very respectable man and he was in no way responsible for bis son's conduct.

" You have not shown yourself to lie worthy of much consideration, but I will give you one more chance," said the magistrate to accused. " You will he convicted and ordered to conie up for sentence within six months if called upon. If there is any complaint with regard to your conduct during that time, you will receive the maximum sentence I am able to impose oil this charge and also the maximum scntence on the original charge.
