BEACH RESCUE METHODS

VALUE OF SURF BOATS AUSTRALIA IN THE LEAD Over 2300 bathers were rescued from the surf on Australian beaches last season and over 22,000 have been rescued since the formation of the Surf Life-saving Association of Australia in 1907. Mr. A. I. Cottrell, secretary of the Canterbury Surf Life-saving Association, who visited Australia with the All Black Rugby team this year, speaking a few days ago of the work which lias been done in Australia by the beach patrols and the surf associations, said that' the Canterbury Association was attempting to follow the lead of the Australian Association in making the local beaches as safe as possible for bathers. Mr. Cottrell has secured the screening rights of a thrilling moving picture showing an actual surf rescue by surf-boats on a Sydney beach and this picture will be shown at the Surf Association's entertainment at the Civic Theatre, Christchurch, on Tuesday evening next. Mr Cottrell, who had the opportunity of riding in one of the new surf-boats on Sydney beaches, said that there were nearly 60 of these boats in use to-day among Australian surf clubs, and their adaptability for use in very heavy seas was proved time and again with a, resultant great saving of life.
