RAIN BELOW AVERAGE CHANGEABLE CONDITIONS MILD TEMPERATURES GENERAL Changeable weather, with a slightly heavier rainfall than in October, 19211, was experienced last month. The rainfall was below the average, but heavy showers were experienced toward the end of the month, with benefit to pastures and dairy production. Fine, warm days were experienced at the start of the month, but later the weather became more boisterous, with easterly conditions prevailing at times. A report for the past month made by Mr. S. M. Yallop, official Government observer, shows that the mean maximum temperature was 61.27 degrees, compared with 59.9 degrees in October, 1931, while the mean minimum temperature was 53.66 degrees, compared with 50.6 degrees in the previous October. The highest temperature recorded last month was 68.5 degrees on October 8, while the lowest was 46.5 degrees on October 3. The extremes of heat and cold recorded in the corresponding month last year were 66 and 43 degrees respectively. The duration of sunshine was slightly smaller than that in October, 1931. The total period of bright sunshine recorded was 188 hours 18 minutes, compared with 192 hours in the corresponding month last year. The greatest duration on any one day was on October 14, when the sun shone brightly for 11 hours 36 minutes. There was bright sunshine for 10 hours 36 minutes on two days during October last year. The rainfall was slightly below the average, a total of 3.33 in. being recorded, as against the average of 3.58 in. taken over the last 76 years. The rainfall for the same month last year was 2.15 in. The maximum fall last month was 1.25 in. on October 23, and altogether rain fell on 16 days. The mean barometric pressure for the month was 30.035 in., which was exactly the same as the figure for October, 1931. The maximum of 30.623 in. occurred on October 4, and the minimum of 29.443 in. on October 24. The corresponding figures for last year were 30.445 in. and 29.650 in. In his general comments on the month's weather, Mr. Yallop states that barometric readings were high at the beginning of the month.
