FINAL TRACK WORK

USEFUL TASKS RECORDED KOLMAR TROTS SOLIDLY NELL VOLO'S EVEN DISPLAY BY ABAYDOS * There was very littlo work at Epsom yesterday, when tho cinders and sand tracks were in use. Several horses were given useful tasks, but the majority of trainers were satisfied to confine the work to jogging. After racing last Saturday and fast work on Tuesday and Thursday nearly all the horses engaged to-day are in fine form. Kolmar (A. W. Brougliton) was given several rounds at a useful pace and then sprinted three furlongs at a 2.20 speed. Ho gathered pace quickly and infused plenty of dash into his task. Kolmar is now trotting in his best style, and, in spite of his difficult handicap, may run a good race today, especially if the track ia on the soft side. Nell Yolo (F. J. Sinilh) trotted in faultless stylo over threo circuits, - being accompanied for the major part of the journey by La Triumph (J. Shaw). They were not out for time, but went evenly. Nell Volo later trotted a lap by herself at a 2.30 rate. Marble Star (A. Millen) worked strongly over three laps nnd showed keenness in his work. The race ho had last week has sharpened him up, and, although he has a peculiar action, he is trotting very solidly at present. Fisher (A. Patten) was allotted strong work unhoppled. He paced smoothly und appeared anxious to go faster. Dan Direct (A. Patten) was given a similar task and pulled hard all the way. He appreciated the firm footing and did his work pleasinglyDirect Morning (W. E. Cockbill) was let off with easy jogging. He pulled hard, but his driver kept him under restraint. Jersey Thorpe (L. Mahoney) gavo ti sound display of unhoppled pacing and went with a lot of dash Kvheh allowed to Bpeed up for a few furlongs. He looks improved for liia racing at Hamilton and Epsom. , . , . , F. Brennan gave Lady Amanda, Lislea. and To Wahia plenty of strong pace work on the sand. The Tamahere candidates have not. been worked fast since racing last Saturday, but they are in excellent heart for to-dav's engagements. , First Flight, who has como into favour for the Labour Day Handicap, was logged at a useful pace behind Mattie Herbilwyn. She looks nice and bright and has dono well on the work allotted to her during tho week. Parrish Belle (A. G. Pillenger) was given strong work on tho sand and hit out freely when stepped along faster in the straigh^. Stormy Mack (J. Fearn) was restricted to long, slow work Although he lost a bit of condition after his hard .race I« n t Sat irday, he has picked UP again and looks nice al princf h Etawah (P. Morrison) executed a useful task on the sand. He_^*» s pff-coloiir after his run in Uie Parnell Handicap but has made good progress during tho Inst few days. BEST TWO-MILE TIMES BRENTLIGHT'S GOOD MARGIN From a time point of view, Brentlight holds the most favourable position among the runners in the Labour Day Handicap to-day, ns ho has a placed performance ot 4"9 and is on a 4.35 mark. Last season lie was five times in a minor place over two miles, and his slowest effort was a tuK over 4.32. but Iheso times were registered on the Addington dirt track. At Claudelands threo weeks ago, Brentlight finished seconct to Direct Morning in the Mark Memorial Handicap, registering 4.34 1-5. from 4.37, tho winner running 4.32 1-5 from 4..5 G. -Ihis was Direct Morning's best time oyer two miles, and he is now handicapped to go 4.32. At Hamilton, Peter Pirate went 4.26 4-5 to run third,, from 4.25, and as a result of Direct Morning's win in the JeUicoe Handicap last Saturday,, both Brentlight and Peter Pirate are meeting him on much better terms. Real Girl has a placed performance of 4.29 2-5s on a dirt track, and is racing off 4.3-1, and on the score of figures the Kennerley triple bracket must be accounted hard to beat to-dny. Anon has registered 4.27 3-5 on the dirt and is on 4.33, but she has yet to prove that she can show anything approaching that speed on the k The following table gives the best time of each competitor ior a plate, together with to-day's handicap:— Best time Place Hdcp.
