FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of October 28, 1882: v . : The French Minister of Justice, in applying for a change of venue in the trial of a number of Socialist strikers, declared that he held in his hands evidence of a vast revolutionary organisation which is now penetrating France. This statement has * caused much excitement throughout the country. The British Government has intimated that it is prepared to receive tenders for the supply of Australian frozen meat to the Army. The " larrikin " element in the neighbourhood of Epsom has lately developed itself in the practice of catching any horses that may be at large on the roads and riding them about at racing pace after nightfall. The horse-owners had reached that point beyond which human endurance cannot stretch on Monday last, and had resolved to make an example of the ringleaders, when an accident occur red to one of the youths which will, it is hoped, have the effect of stopping the in tolerable nuisance. t-f The New Zealand Shipping Company have determined to establish a regular branch office in Timaru, and lay on a direct line of ships between that port and London. The wool ships for this season are already advertised, the first two being the Asterion . and Cingalese. They n '' o of about 700 tons register, and will be loaded entirely inside the breakwater. There is now ample water. A telegram has been received by the Plumbago Mining Company. Limited, indicating that a vein of graphite had been struck, and that specimens would be sent to Auckland. These specimens, having arrived, were on view at Mr. peers' office yesterday, and look well for giving good returns.
