STOCK EXCHANGES

..YESTERDAY'S SALES RETURN ON INVESTMENTS Following is a list of yesterday's transactions on New Zealand Stock Exchanges. In the second column is given the return, based on the last annual dividend, from investment at the quoted price, in "the case of Government and other redeemable securilies no return is given, in view of the new method of quotation, but tie months in which interest is duo are shown. In calculating the return on shaves in companies which pay their dividends outside New Zealand exchange rates, being liable to fluctuation, have not been taken into consideration. The first column gives pie figures at which tho sales were'made:— AUCKLAND EXCHANGE

New Zealand Refrigerating (10s paid). 2s 5d (5); Alexander 03s (id raid). 16s Pd (2), 17s, 17a 3d: Cornish Point. Id (2): Golden Dawn, 5s (2): Golden Point. s(d (6): Okarito, 8s 3d, 8a 3jd. DUNEDIN EXCHANGE Goldsbrouph-Mort . . 1 3 7 3 2 5 Mount Lyell . . ..103 + The following sales also took place:— Cornish Point, 4!d; King Solomon, Is lOd; Golden Dawn, 4s lid. ss. * Interim dividend reduced, t Interim dividend passed. * Dividend 12 months in arrears. ft E VIEW OF THE WEEK CONDITIONS MUCH EASIER A LESS ACTIVE MARKET Conditions were easier on the Auckland Stock Exchange during tho week and support which had been built up over a period \yas noticeably lacking Leading issues tended to decline and the closing stages of the week saw holders making concessions. The turnover for the week was reduced owing to the Labour Day holiday. Unfavourable influences were instrumental in checking the forward move in the market, but evidence remains that ample money is available for diversion to sound channels even at the expense of a much reduced return to the investor. During the week Australian - industrial issues, which have been particularly active, were inclined to rest on late gains, and the inquiry was directed more toward Government securities. The rise iu the price of gold kept the mining section active. Waihis advanced on sale fo 18s, the highest point reached for at least three years. • Buyers continue to monopolise the market for State loans and holders remain generally unquoted. Tlio releases during the week were practically all at. a higher rate and closing offers were in advance of those at the opening. There were five sales in the 1937 5£ per cent September issues, a parcel each of bonds and stock changing hands yesterday at £IOO ss, compared with previous prices at £99 17s 6(1 and £IOO. The 1939 4£ per cent stock also registered successive advances, the last of three sales being completed yesterday at £95, only 2s 6d lower than a transaction prior to tho half-yearly interest distribution. The 1938 per cent stock advanced on sale 10s to £97 and the 1936 5i per cent bonds were done £1 higher at £IOO 2s 6d. During the neriod offers for the 1937 5£ per cent issues advanced 5s to £IOO 2s 6d and a riso of 10s to £9B 10s was registered in the case of the 1938 4£ per cent "issues, on which an interest payment is duo shortly. As a whole, tho banks group revealed a weakening demand. Business was fairly dull and most parcels were socurcd at a reduced figure. Now Zealands declined on sale from 46s 3d to 45s 9d and tho interest has not been strong. A price Is 3d higher at £4 Is 3d was secured for a parcel of Nationals of New Zealand, but this fell back to £4 in a later transaction. 'J he insurance section was productive of comparatively few sales and offers tended lo fall during tho week. Nationals were secured Id lower at 14s 6d. New Zealands registered an advance on .sale of 6d to 43s 9d, after which a further parcel was taken at 43s 6d. Tho most significant transaction in the other sections was in Tooth's Brewery at 32s 3d, an advance of 5s 9d over the price secured two months ago. There were further transactions in Australian Glass and British Tobacco at approximately lato rates, but Colonial Sugars declined from the high level of £SO 5s reached at a sale in the previous week. Parcels were.secured at £SO, £49 15s and £49 15s successively. The only other issue to show sustained activity was Wilsons Cement, four sales fluctuating about, tho last previous price, 31s 3d. Most of the business in mining issues was concentrated iu Waihis, of which a total of ten parcels changed hands. The interest, is payable shortly and the sale price advanced in stages from 17s 6d to 18s. Mount Lyolls have not shown tho same appreciation in value as other mining issues and offers declined during tho week from 21s 9d,to 20s. Tho following comparative table shows the levels of sales miklo at the re-opening of the Auckland Stocfv Exchange in January, together with the lowest price touched since, and the closing sales of the last two weeks:— Jan.
