STATE LOTTERY
PROFITS FOR THE YEAR DIRECTOR REPLIES TO CRITIC . At a Congregational Union meeting in Sydney recently the convener of the public questions committee, the Rev. A. E. West, questioned the correctness of the figure of £803,000, quoted bv the director of the State lottery, Mr. Whiddon, as profit. Mr. Whiddon, in a statement next da\% said: "The figure I quoted is correct. The accounts of the department are authenticated by the Auditor-General, and I would not dare to make an incorrect statement concerning them. Mr. West should know that in a letter sent to me by him he reiterates liis question and asks another concerning the disbursement of lottery proceeds. With reference to the first, I may say that all expenses, including equipment, barrel and marbles, which amount to many thousands of pounds, and furniture, have been taken into account. Many of these items are non-recurring, so that future years' profits should be even greater than £803,000." With regard to the second question asked by Mr. West, Mr. Whiddon said that the allocation of the profits of the lottery had nothing whatever to do with him. It was a matter for the Government.
