FIRE DAMAGES SHOPS
HOTEL OCCUPANTS ALARMED OUTBREAK IN FOXTON BUILDING [by telegraph—press association] FOXTON, Thursday A fire occurred at midnight in a draperyshop in Moutoa Buildings, in the centra of the town. The shop was gutted, and Mr. S. Mattan's tobacconist's shop adjoining was damaged by smoke and water. Smart work by the brigade prevented a serious spread of. the outbreak. The occupants of Whyte's Hotel sleeping overhead made a hurried exit in their night, attire. The insurances were £llOO on th« drapery and £350 on the stock in the tobacconist's shop, in the Commercial Union Office.
COUNTRY HOUSE BURKED ABSENCE OF THE OCCUPANTS [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday A seven-roomed house situated soma distance from the Ohaupo Road, between Melville and Rukuhia, was totally destroyed by fire in the absence of the occupants, Mr. W> Garrard and family, yesterday afternoon. The cause of the fire is not known and the occupants knew nothing of the outbreak until they returned to find th# dwelling in ruins. None of the contents was saved. The house, which was owned by Mr. L. Seifert, of Palmerston North, was insured with- the New Zealand Insurance Company for £BOO.
