FORM AT TRENTHAM NEW ZEALAND CUP HORSES FAST PASSAGE IMPRESSES [from our own correspondent] WELLING TON, Wed n esd a y Ten of tho 21 New Zealand Cup horses raced at tho Wellington meeting, namely. Gay Crest, Historic. Arikira, Spenrful, Fast. Passage. Minerval, Merry Peel, Palm, Red Sun and Flower. Historic, Fast Passage and Merry Peel were winners on tho fiat and Palm was successful over hurdles. The form of these horses as regards cup possibilities revealed Fast Passage in a very favourable light. She should have won the Wellington Handicap on Ibo first day and on the second she stayed on very solidly to win. Fast Passage, who is a sister to Waterline, has developed into a very solidlooking maro and she will have most friends for the cup of those who were seen in action here. Historic won the Harcourl Cup. but on that form his prospects of defeating Gav Crest, who will make a bigger improvement, do not look bright. Arikira's form makes him a poor prospect for Riccarton. and Minerval will have to improve. Merrv Peel appears more likely in tho Stewards' Handicap than at two miles. Pnhu will stay all right, but his flat form is not up to expectations, and both Red Sun and Flower will have to make marvellous progress in the fortnight if either is to win the New Zealand Cup. Tho goiii!* nt Riccarton will be different from what was experienced here. but. making full allowance for that, Fast Passace appears to bold safely all those that were saddled up nt tho Wellington meeting. Cadland. ".rent Star, Royal Routine. Arrow Lad. Merry Peel, Rational 11.. La Poupee, Normandy and The Quorn were Stewards' Handicap candidates racing at Wellington. Cadland was-unplaced in his only start, but on tho better going at Riccarton ho should be moro prominent. Great Star is probably in better form than ever at present, and. freshened up for the Stewards' Handicap, he should bo dangerOU Royal Routine will need to improve and Arrow Lad also, but Merry Peel should be a possibility. There is a suspicion, however, that iiis brilliancy has been dimmed by bis recent racing over longer journeys. Of the lightweights. La Poupee and Iho Oliorn will make most appeal. Normandy raced below form in his only start, but ho was unable to hit out well in the soft going and he is likely to do better on top of the gfound. Normnndy nnd Tho Quorn are hi hack class and they may find the compimy in tho Stewards' just a littlo too strong. riccarton gossip RESUMPTION OF TRAINING CUP RIDER FOR SHATTER [nV TISIjKGRAPil —OWN CORRKBPON PENT] CHRISTCHURCII, Thursday The Riccarton tracks wcro reopened today and were freely patronised. In spite of tho soaking rainfall of tho previous five days tho outside of tho trial grass piovidotl Boft but reasonably good going. Apart troni those racing at Trenthom nil horses have hud an easy time since last week and in consequence were restricted to short work only to-day. while fast Union were out or the question. t . t t , Those trainers who had looked forwaia to racing their horses at Rangiora on Labour Day and others who did not contemplate such a- lengthy break in training operations aTO beginning to feel some anxiety, especially in regard to .New Zealand Cup candidates. One of these is Concintiatc, who, except for* some useful work on Saturday, has hot been able to gallop uince returning from Sydney. Although a definite engagement has not been made it is almost certain that A, Eastwood will ride Fast Passage in tho New Zealand Cup. Eastwood won the race on Chide three years ago, was unplaced op Desert Glow the following year and 12 months ago was beaten by half a length oil Admiral Drake . Shatlcr is likely to have < - ' services of L. .T. Ellis, who will be frc ■(> a result ol Merry Peel's probable defe The Apprentices' Handicap on the first day's programme of tho cup meeting is»tonfined to hacks that have never won a race of six furlongß or under at tho timo of starting. Since the nominations were received on Friday last it has bocn ascertained that no fewer , than seven of tho 19 horses entered aro ineligible under this condition, tlieso comprising Tippling, Craigavon, lEnilpent. Palantua, Revision, Fleeting Glance and Late .Test. P. T, Ilogari is ut present nt Riccarton with Water Power, Elgipdale nnd .Rot hem. Earthquake, in the charge of the Greymonth trainer R. Orange, made her ro-ap-pearance at .Riccarton to-dny. She bus grown into a solid mare and is reported to have allown better form in recent track essays on the West Coast than at #ny stage of her career. She was accompanied by the aged gelding Subdivision, also trained b.v Orange. Subdivision has a bright appearance, but has never been partial .to _soft. going, and to-day shaped very poorly in a half-mile tank.
