THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE LESS ACTIVETQ.NE 'After several days of fairly brisk trading the tone on the" Auckland Stock Exchange was less active yesterday, although a moderate amount of business ■was transacted. Government securities, which have been selling freely recently, were once more in demand,/ but no sales resulted. Prices were generally in accordance with late levels. In local body debentures City of Auckland, 1940, per cent, changed haritls for the first time this month at £9B 10s, an increase of £l. Further minor fluctuations occurred in banks and the tone of the market was less steady. Two sales took place, Commercials,. of Australia at the unaltered figure of 14s 9d, and New Zealands 6d lower at 45s 9d. At the last call "'New Zealands were available at 45s 9d, or 3d less than at the earlier calls, and buyers bid 45s 3d, a rise of 3d. Newgout h Wales were sought 5s lower at £2B 10s, but holders did not' respond. For jjationals of New Zealand holders asked £4 2s, but there were no buyers. Only one sale was completed in the insurance group, New Zealands selling 6d • higher at 43s 9d. There was little variation in the levels. South British,.ex dividend, were sought at 56s 3d. Miscellaneous sections were quieter. Fluctuations occurred in several leading issues, but levels were not greatly altered. Devonp.orb Ferrys 4 sold for 1 the first time for nearly two months at 18s, a decline of .fid. Colonial Sugars.were again quoted at £SO, but several other Australian issues varied slightly. Australian Glass were wanted 3d lower at 39s 9d, holders not being quoted, and EleciroJytic Zincs (preference), ox dividend, were 9d lower for buyers at 24s 9d, and 3d lower for holders at 26s 3d. Taranaki Oils were sought at 2s, holders rising 2d to 2s Bd. Buyers of Wilsons Cements reduced thfeir offers 3d to 30s 9d. - In the mining group a parcel of Waihis told at 17s. 7d, and, three further lots at, 17s Bd, compared with 17s 6d earlier this week. The only other sale was a parcel of Blackwaters at 17s 9d, a gain -of 3d. For Mount Lyells buyers offered 20s Bd, a drop of 4d, and holders quoted 21s 3d, a decline of 6d.
