OPENING OF THE SEASON CLUBS' OFFICIAL FUNCTIONS ASSOCIATION REPRESENTED Several city and suburban lawn tennis clubs officially opened the season on Saturday afternoon, when delightful weather prevailed and there were lurpre attendances at the various courts. The Auckland Lawn Tennis Association was represented in every instance, the .president, Mr. R. B. Hardy, officiating at Mansere East and subsequently visiting other clubs. The association's representatives at other openings wereßallyburton Johnstone, Messrs, M. M. Morrison, N. G. Sturt, A. C. Johns, A. K. Turner, who played exhibition doubles; Kohimaramn, Mr. S. Lamb; Woodhill and Helensville, Messrs. P. Harrison, J. Harrison, E. W. Griffiths, A. Bockett; Avondale, Mr. C. Ellis; Ngatira, Mt E. Tonks. GRAFTON CLUB Tho Grafton Tennis Club opened the season o n Saturday, when there was a largo gathering of old and new members, and visiting tennis players. The club is associated with tho Auckland Bowling Club, and occupies the grass lawns on the Bowling Club's property in Grafton Road. air. Is. Games wero enjoyed throughout tho aftcrlioon. Y.M.C.A. CLUB The official opening of the Y.M.C.A. Lawn Tennis Club was- held 011 Saturday in ideal weather, approximately 150 being present, including representatives from various clubs. Tho gathering was addressed by tho president, Mr. E. Kitchener, who commented favourably on the improved conditions under which the club will bo playing during this season. Brief remarks were mado by Mr. b. deal, president of tho West End Club, and Mr. Hamilton, representing Bayfield. A trophv in tho form of a cup was presented by W. H. Fortune, captain of the club, to be competed for annually by the Bayfield, West End and Y.M.C.A. Clubs. Tho courts were declared open, when Mrs. Fortune served the first bull. At the tea hour Mr. IT. G. Fountain, vicepresident of tho Y.M.C.A.. presented the trophies won during last season to Miss Hemus, Mesdames Wilson and Martin, and E Bassett. A very enjoyable* afternoon was spent by all and the games were so arranged that everyone had two or three sets. MA NCI ERE EAST CLUB The official opening of the Mangere East Lawn Tennis Club took place 011 Saturday under ideal weather conditions. Mr. S. W. Ilouse, president, extended n welcomo to the many visitors, and referred to the excellent progress made by the club. He stated that the bank overdraft had been reduced by over £'so since last year, and that the membership of tho club now stood at /a. Mr. R. B. Hardy, president of tho Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, congratulated the club on the condition of its courts tind referred to the success of the championship and handicap tournaments held on the courts last Christmas, when a record entry was received. Mrs House was then called upon to unfurl tiie flag and the courts were declared open. A progressive tournament was played, the winners being S. Latta and Miss M. Kay. BIRKENHEAD AND NORTHCOTE The official opening of the Birkenhead and Northcotj* Lawn Tennis Club's courts for the season was performed 011 Saturday afternoon by the president, Mr. L. S. Maxwell, the first ball being served over the net by Mrs. 11. Weaver. A progressive tournament was played. 20 lady visitors and 20 visiting men taking part. There was a large gathering, which included the Mayors or Birkenhead and Northcote. Messrs G. Mills and R. Martin, and also Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Martin, and Mrs. J. O. Gardner, the president's daughter. Mr. R. Martin conveyed wishes 011 behalf of the boroughs for a successful and pleasant season. The club had made the subscriptions very low this year, in order to retain and increase its membership, and so make for tile success of the, season. More local tournaments on tho Northcote courts weie to be held, and therefore travelling to mora distant centres by tho club's teams would probably not bo so frequent as hitherto. WELCOME CLUB'S OPENING The Welcome Lawn Tennis Club's courts at Birkenhead wero officially opened on Safmdav afternoon by the president, Mr (». Mills Mayor, the. first ball being served by the Mayoress. Mrs. Mills. There was a good attendance, and the function passed ofl most successfully. AUCKLAND CLUB'S OFFICERS Trophies won during the past season were presented at the annual general meeting ot the Auckland Lawn Tennis Club to the following:—Men's singles championship: 11. W Curtis. Men's Ringles handicap: 11. \V. Curtis Ladies' singles championship, Mrs. K Cadness. Ladies' singles handicap: Miss Waite- Ladies' doubles championship: Mrs. R. Cadness and Miss R. Major. The courts, five of which have been resurfaced, were formally declared open for play by the president, Mi. T Wood, after which Mr. 1. Harrison, representing the Auckland Lawn A elation, addressed the gathering. Miss Wood served the first ball, and then exhibition doubles were played by Mpbß''»- Har ~ Hubble. Mr. F, Mogford presided over delegates from tho Whangarei, I-lorahora, Hikurangi. Parakao and. Manse Clubs. Tho bal-ance-sheet disclosed a credit balance of £'3 15s. Tho main object of the sub-association is to handle matters in connection with the Rishworth Shield, and it was decided to hand the shield over to the North Auckland Association, with tho recommendation that it be competed for as a challengo shield. 3t was also decided that tho eub-associa-tioi) go into recess and that its funds bo handed over to the North Auckland Association, to bo held in trust for a period of two years, and if the sub-association does not function ot the end of that period, Hie money to become the property of the association.

HALLYBURTON-JOHNSTONE CLUB Ideal weather prevailed for the official opening of the Hnllyburton-Johnstone Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday, and the occasion was marked by a large attendance of members and friends. Other clubs represented were Auckland, Balmoral, Bayfield, Murist. Nicholson Park and Prince of Wales. The president, Mr. A. E. Schade. welcomed the visitors and expressed pleasure at seeing such a largo and enthusiastic gathering of members and friends. Mr. R. B. Hardy, president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, gave a brief outline of the association's activities, and also congratulated the club on its great progress. Mr. J. A. Lee, M.L\. patron of the club, also spoke highly of its progress and performance in winning the D grade inter-club championship. Before declaring the courts open Mr. Leo piesented the Wolseley Hornet Cup and miniature, for the Indies' singles handicap, to the winner. Miss E. Hall. The vice-patron, Mr. S. G. Crookbain, presented Mrs. Schade. wife of the president, with n ball chid in the club's colours and. after hitting this over the net. the afternoon's entertainment commenced. The outstanding feature of the afternoon was the exhibition match plaved between Messrs. A. C. Johns and N. G. Sturt and A. K. Turner and M. M. Morrison, resulting in a win for the first-named pair in two sets. Afternoon tea was provided by the Indies' committee. A very successful dance was held in the club's pavilion in the evening. PUKEKOHE SUBURBAN CLUB [from OUR OWN correspondent] rUKEKOHE, Saturday The official opening of the Suburban Tennis Club's season was held this afternoon in perfect, weather. The president, Mr. C. Lauer, declared the courts open and Mrs. J. Adams, jun., played tho first ball. Tho attendance was large and included many visitors from other clubs. THAMES METHODIST CLUB [IIY TKLEOItAriI—OWN CORRESPONDENT] THAMES, Saturday Tho Thames Methodist Lawn Tennis Club officially opened its courts for play this afternoon. Dr. Gray, president, welcomed visitors from Turua. Waitnkaruru, Hikutaia and Paeroa. Referring to the financial stress Dr. Gray said tho club had extended the time limit for payment of subscriptions without penalty from December until February. The couits were in full use nil the afternoon, rain holding off after the showery morning.
