BOUTS AT KING'S COLLEGE FINALS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS GOOD EXHIBITIONS GIVEN A fine series of bouts was staged in tho finals of tho King's College annual boxing championships at tho college gymnasium at Middlemore on Saturday evening. Tho 17 bouts in the contests, which ranged from paper-weight to heavy-weight, wero strongly contested, and most of the results were very close, the winners being but slightly ahead on points, lechaical knock-out decisions wero given in six bouts. Tho lighter contestants displayed a considerable knowledge of ringcral't and footwork, and gained frequent applause from tho spectators, who included parents and friends of the boys. The best bout of the evening was that between Rhodes and Jacobs in the wel-ter-weight final. Opening at a furious pace, the boys exchanged double-handed blows standing toe to toe. Both took considerable punishment and were very tired in tho concluding round.' Rhodes gained the verdict and Jacobs was awarded a special prize by the referee, Mr. N. McLean, of the Northern Boxing Association, as tho best loser of the tournament. At tho conclusion of the bouts it was announced that J. E. Makgill, winner of the middlo-weight championship, had challenged G. D. A. Lundon, winner of tho heavy-weight, to a contest for the school championship. Tho results wero:— Paper-weight.—Final: D. W. R. Bell, 6st., beat R. B. Bennen, 6st. 81b., on points. Tho winner consistently scored with straight-left leads. Feather-weight.—Semi-finals: D. I\ Calvert, 7st., beat D. C. Roberton, 6st. 61b., by a technical knock-out; M. A. Hume, 6st. 121b., beat R. G. King, 6st. 71b., on points. Final: Ilurno boat Calvert on points, in a good bout. Calvert made a fine finish, but could not wipe but the deficit. Bantam-weight.—Semi-finals: A. L. Shrubsall, 7st. 61b., beat R. F. Pluggo, 7st. 41b., on points; C. McGruther, 7st. Sib., beat R. H. Parker, 7st. 131b., on points. Final: McGruther beat Shrubsall by a technical knock-out. Tho winner scored heavily with both hands. Light-weight.—Semi-finals: E. Wade, Bst. 51b., beat P. R. Western, Bst. 91b., on points; J. McGruther, Bst. 111b., beat J. R. Sidebottom, Bst. 71b., on points. Final: McGruther beat Wado on a technical knock-out. Ho bustled his opponent from the gong with a two-handed attack and was declared tho winner in the first round. Welter-weight.—Semi-finals: A. C. Jacobs, 9st. 81b., beat R. H. Pope, 9st., on a technical knock-out in tho firstround; T. N. Rhodes, 9st. lib., beat T. R. A. Davis, 9st. 61b. Final: Rhodes beat Jacobs on points. Opening at a great pace both exchanged rights and lefts without cither yielding an inch. Tho pace slowed in the second round, when both took considerable punishment. There were some fine rallies in the last round, both boys giving a fine exhibition of gamcness. Middle-weight.—Semi-finals: J. E. Makgill, lOst. 131b., beat H. L. G. MacIndoo, lOst. 61b., on a technical knockout in the second round; K. M. Moses, list lib., beat P. B. McCarthy, list lib., on a technical' knock-out in the third round. Final: Makgill beat Moses on points in a splendid bout. Makgill used both hands to advantage and dropped Moses with a straight right to the head in the first round. Both opened cautiously in the second round and warmed up to hard, even exchanges. Makgill forced the fight to the end and scored steadily with both hands. Heavy-weight.—Final: G. D. A. Lundon, 12st 21b., beat R. E. E. Featherstone, 12st 21b.,.0n points in a hard encounter, in which each man missed his opponent frequently. An exhibition bout of five rounds wa3 given by W. Hogg and I. Hogg, of Auckland.
