UNDERGROUND WATER

MOUNT EDEN PROPOSAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT VIEW Following upon the Mount Eden Borough Council's recent consideration of a supply of underground water within its district, suggested by two water diviners, a communication has been received from the Health Department stating that any proposal to obtain water from underground sources in a centre of large population was viewed with concern. The letter, which came before the council at a meeting last evening; added that concern was felt, more especially in regard to country of uncertain formation, owing to its volcanic nature. Tho council recently was provided with a • report from two "diviners indicating a possible supply of water near Mount Eden Road, ¥ about 100yd3. below the road leading up the mountain. A special committee of three councillors was appointed to deal with the question of an underground supply within the borough, although the matter has not been carried furthej - . Commenting upon the communication from the department, Mr. W. H. Nagle said the council had not, as yet, been involved in an expense of even £lO as a result of its inquiry. Mr. J. J. Mulviliill said the mountain, because of its formation, was a natural filter for water. In spite of that, were tho proposal to be carried further, the water would be submitted to a laboratory test, and such a procedure should provide tho final word on the matter. The communication was received.
