'GREAT MERCURY ISLAND PERMISSION GRANTED TO LAND Yachtsmen wishing to land on the Government Reserve on tlie Great Mercury Island have permission -to do so, according to a letter received last evening by the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association from the Department of Lands and Survey. The chairman, Mr. C. 11. T. Palmer, stated that, while it was generally known that .1 reserve for yachtsmenexisted on the island, the owner would not allow anyorio to land. The association, however, had taken the matter up with the Government with the result that the Lands and Survey Department had not only forwarded the necessary permission for yachtsmen to land on the' reserve, but also plans of the locality. The letter to the association stated that the reserve had been set aside for tho convenience of tho boating fratermty and was tho only public property on the island. Tho control of the reserve rested with the department and, in-order that the owner of the island might enjoy peaceful occupation granted him by his title, the department specially requested yachtsmen using the landing not to cause the owner any annoyance; The letter further stated that a temporary grazing lease of tho reserve had been granted to the owner of the island. The reserve is 1900 ft. by 100 ft., and is situated on the eastern side of the Great Mercury Island. The association decided to forward a copy of the letter and plans to ths various yacht and motor-boat clubs.
