FTFTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of September 26, 1882:

Our Egyptian despatches confirm the news of the surrender of the, rebel commander afc Pamje>ta and the subsequent, occupation of that place by the British. A review of the English troops at Cairo has been held and lias had a good effect upon the natives, who are now more abject, and submissive. The capital has been illuminated in honour of the British. In order to disabuse the native mind of the false impressions created by reports circulated by the National Party, the Khedive has found it necessary to issue a proclamation to his subjects informing them that he has received satisfactory assurances that England has no intention of annexing Egypt. It is stated that Admiral Seymour and General Sir Garnet Wolseley are to be raised to the Peerage. At St. George's Church, Thames, last Sunday, the morning service was made specially appropriate as a thanksgiving service for the success of the British arms in Egypt by the attendance of the Naval Brigade and cadets. The Rev. Mr. Calder preached a sermon partly upon the subject of the Egyptian War, which he characterised as one of the most just and satisfactory wars England has been engaged in. '
