AN AUSTRALIAN ANTHEM
AUDIENCE REMAINS SEATED REBUKE BY MR. LANG An orchestra "struck up "Advance Australia Fair" when the Leader of the New South Wales State Opposition' Mr. Lang, entered the crowded Arcadia Theatre, Lidcombe, recently, to present an illuminated address and wallet of notes to Alderman F. Wilson, on behalf of a local citizens' movement. While the orchestra was playing what Mr. Lang later described as Austr.ilia's national anthem, the audience remained seated.
Mr. Lang, who had been enthusiastically cheered as he walked to the platform, said, at the beginning of his speech, that • he wished to lodge a „ complaint against the large audience. "When I entered the hall," he added, "I was thrilled to hear the orchestra playing our national anthem,; 'Advance Australia Fair,' but was disappointed to see the members of this huge audience keeping their seafs. Do yon realise what- the anthem is ? It is not merely a song; it is your national anthem. Yon should rise from your seat« when it is played or sung. What about doing it now ?" Again the orchestra played "Advance Australia Fair." This time the audience not only rose, but sang the anthem with vigour.
