LIQUOR AT PIPIRIKI

LICENSING ACT BREACHES SALES OF BEER AND WHISKY FINES TOTAL SEVENTY POUNDS i At the Raetihi Magistrate's Court last week 26 charges wero set down for hearing in connection v with breaches of Iho Liconsing Act at Pipiriki. The defendant was James Ernest Shaw, a river boat etoward.

The cases dealt with keeping liquor for sale, selling liquor and supplying liquor to natives in a proclaimed no-licenco area at Pipiriki. Counsel stated that defendant would plead guilty to 15 breaches and the polico had agreed to withdraw 11 charges. Sergeant Joyce said that Shaw was the steward on the river boat on the run between Pipiriki and tho houseboat. Ho finished his duties on the boat on its arrival at Pipiriki. Ho had a room at tho back of Pipiriki House known as "Tho Ark." Complaints of sly grog-selling had been made to tho police and investigations had been made. Evidence was obtained that Shaw had kept liquor at "The Ark" and had sold it to natives and white men. In one instance, continued Sergeant Joyce, two natives went to "The Ark" and Shaw sold them a bottle of beer each, for which he charged 2s. On Juno 18 ho sold beer to about eight to ten*men. On June 21 and tho next day he sold to white men and also natives, charging 2s a bottle for beer and 8s a bottle for small or half-bottles of whisky. Tho man was openly defying the law and selling liquor in the proscribed proclaimed aroa to natives and white people. On one occasion five dozen empty bottles wero found.

Mr. R. M.. Watson, S.M., said that the charges could not be treated as not being serious. There were ten cases of selling beer. He would inflict a fine of £5 in each of these cases. There were two charges of selling whisky and he would make the fine £lO each in thosn cases. On the charges of keeping liquor for sale he wold convict and would order defendant to pay costs only. Defendant was ordered to pay £22 10s 6d (including costs) at once and the remainder at the rate of £2O a month.
