THE ASSOCIATION GAME

DUN ED IN DEFEATS DIOMEDE MARGIN OF THREE GOALS PASSING STANDARD HIGH In spito of greasy underfoot conditions and slippery ball, representatives of H.M.S. Diomede and H.M.S. Dunedin gave a fast arid entertaining exhibition of Soccer at Blandford Park on Saturday, when tho latter, playing with fino understanding, gained a well-deserved victory. Both teams swung tlio ball about with great freedom, while the passing of the victors, especially, was of a high standard. Following wero the teams:—

H.M.S. Dunedin.—Mitch, Preston, Orr, Oakley, Lund, Wilkes, Swan, Carlili, Clurke ; McFndyen, Tile.

H.M.S. Diomede.—Ellmnn, Burnett, Milos, Bussell, Bradley. Connor, Elwell, Haines, Leonard, Scott, Stnley. Tho charucterietic dash of the Navy players was early in evidence, play swinging from end to end with both teams exploiting the long passing game. Showing a better understanding, the Dunedin team swept constantly into Diomede territory, where tho backs were hard pressed on defence. Carlili and Clarke showed a good knowledge of one another's play, and an incisive movement in which they co-operaled with Swan almost produced result. Tito also crossed nicely, but there was no player to add the finishing touch. Staley received an injury at this stage and, although ho carried on, was obviously of little use to his Bido. The Diomede team had only figured spasmodically in an aggressive role, Leonard, Haines and Elwell, who wero providing tho major initiative, finding difficulty in coping with the Dunedin backs. A strong naval representation around the ground was stirring the teams to greater efforts, the game, at this stage, amply compensating for any lack of polish by the Bpeed of tho exchanges. Bradley and Elwell both had Mitch extended with flashing ground shots, but the custodian handled safely each time. At the other end Ellman was saving his side from many awkward positions with daring and. brilliant saves. Clarke and Carlili were proving most tlirustful for Dunedin, moving nicely from time to time under the able direction of Lund and Wilkes in the halves. Shots wero slammed in at Ellman, but he handled safely. Dunedin was still in an aggressive mood when tho spell came with no score.

Diomede went to the attack on resuming, a nice exchange of passes between Elwell, Leonard nnd Haines seeing the last-named shoot past when in a handy position. Activities swung quickly to tho other end, where Clarke "speculated" from outside the penalty area, Ellman seeing the ball flash clear of the post after he had flung himself full length in an. endeavour to save. Maintaining its long passing game, Diomede raced back, and after a fino passing bout Elwell received possession. He steadied himself for a point-blank shot, but Mitoh threw himself and effected a brilliant save. Neither side could claim any permanent advantage, the play fluctuating at a fast pace in spite of the greasy underfoot conditions. Lund sent upfield to McFadyen, who, with Clarke trailing in support, timed his pass to perfection, and the centre-forward went through to score a good goal. Diomedo was now penned up, while its opponents strove desperately to increase their lead. Swinging the ball with speed and accuracy, Clarke, Carlili and McFadyen wended through the defence, and as Clarke shot the goalkeeper dived and was knocked out. Carlili secured a rebound nnd scored, but the goal was disallowed for alleged dangerous play against the custodian. However, Dunedin was not to be denied, and Tile gave Clarke an opportunity, which he realised on in a quick and efficient manner. Carlili added another a few minutes later after receiving from a melee, the ball skidding into the corner of tho uet, in spite of Ellman's desperate effort to save. Dunedin held the advantage to the end, when the score was:— Dunedin. 3; Diomede. 0. Mr. E. Parkinson was referee.
