DARING THIEF'S WILES
ROBBERY OF A CAFE TILL ESCAPE AFTER CAPTURE-. Stepping up to the till of a cafe in Pitt Street, Sydney, on- a recent afternoon, a thief .coolly grabbed the contents and fled into the street. He was chased and caught, but broke free again. After having a meal at the catc, a welldressed young man walked up to the cashier, and tendered , a 10s note in payment. The girl opened the till to get change, and at the same timo the man leaned over the counter and grasped a handful of notes. He rushed into Pitt Street, pushing the notes into his pocket. A few diners gave chase. Tho man ran along to Adams' Hotel, and entered the bar, where one of his pursuers grasped him. Another man held the runaway while the police were summoned. The suspect protested that he wa s a well-known resident of Sydney, and a man of substance. He offered to show his bank pass book to prove his boua-fides, and he was temporarily released. Seizing his opportunity he raced out of the bar again and disappeared in the crowd in the street. It is believed that he stole about £l6.
