EFFECTS OF FASTING

IMPRISONED HAHATMA GANDHI LOSING STRENGTH EFFORTS FOR SETTLEMENT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (.Received September 23, 8.55 p.m.) CALCUTTA, Sept. 23 The Indian Nationalist leader, Gandhi, who has his own physician in attendance at the Yeravada gaol, met leaders of the depressed classes to-day and discussed proposals for a solution of the problem of their representation in the Legislatures. High hopes are still entertained of ati agreement, approved by Gandhi, which would justify the British Government in modifying the terms of the communal award in respect to the depressed classes. If such an agreement were reached it is presumed that Gandhi would break his fast. His strength evidently is not the same as when ho fasted for 42 days a few years ago. Already he is showing signs of exhaustion after fasting 36 hours. Gandhi's wife, who is also a political prisoner, was transferred to \eravada gaol to take care of her husband. Gandhi has frequent drinks of water containing a small quantity of soda. Leaders of the Hindu " untouchables " have renewed their efforts at Poona to reach a settlement of the electorates issue. After an interview with Gandhi last night they stated that his final decision is likely to be made to-day.
