WINDOW GARDENS

SUITABLE PLANTS Window gardening refers to the cultivation of plants in pots with saucers provided to prevent the moisture after watering running into the room, and also to plants in boxes or other suitable receptacles placed on outside sills. Cyclamens, Chinese primulas, and tho obconica and malacoides varieties, well-grown and in full flower, make even the ordinary window most attractive. Cinerarias, tuberousrooted and other begonias, and other plants, grown in pots elsewhere, may replace any that have completed their usefulne'ss. Window boxes made to fit on and suit the available spaces in front of the window, or on tho verandah, should be filled with a compost of loamy soil and leaf mould with sufficient sand to make the mixturo porous; good drainage must be provided. iNow is a good timo to plant new boxes and to rearrange the old as necessary. Among window-box plants that generally succeed well some of the following may bo chosen: —Ivy-leaved, zonal and other pelargoniums, trailing fuchsias, dwarf-growing cannas, tuberousrooted begonias, aubretias geums, Agathea coelestis, campanulas, gerberas, mesembryanthemums, etc. Among suitable annuals are trailing lobelias, French marigolds, dwarf double nasturtiums, verbenas, petunias, dwarf coreopsis, and Phlox Drummondii. The foregoing are suitable for the summer boxes. For winter and spring, flowering cyclamens, pansies, Iceland poppies, calendulas, narcissus, polyanthus, primulus, trailing lobelias, lachenalias, nerines, shasta daisy, gaillardias, etc., may bo effectually utilised.
