STOCK EXCHANGES

YESTERDAY'S SALES RETURN ON INVESTMENTS Following is a list of yesterday's transactions on New Zealand Stock Exchanges. In the second column is given the return, based on the last annual dividend, from investment at the quoted price. In the case of Government and other redeemable securities no return is given, in view of the new method of quotation, but the months in which interest is due are shown. In calculating the return on shares in companies which pay their dividends outside New Zealand exchange rates, being liable to fluctuation, have not been taken into consideration. The first column gives the figures at which the sales were made:— AUCKLAND EXCHANGE .Return on Sale Price Investment £ad £ s d Stock, 1937, 5* (FebAug.) . . REVIEW OF THE WEEK FIRM LEVELS MAINTAINED STEADY VOLUME OF BUSINESS Firm conditions were maintained on the Auckland Stock Exchange during the past week, and the volume of business showed little alteration from that of the previous week. Steady levels were maintained in Government loans and dealing was light. Sellers of Australian banks showed little activity, and with some reaction still apparent in buying support after the higher levels touched recently, few requirements were satisfied. New Zealands, however, wero again freely dealt in, levels shading from last week's price of 48s to 475, with a final gain to 47s 6d. Unions were another active issue, and after fairly steady trading from £7 lis to £7 12s, rose sharply on sale at the close to £7 14s.

commercials gained o« in tno week to 15s. Although New South Wales gave way 7s 6d to change hands at £27 2s 6d, buyers were unable to locate any subsequent supplies with offers of £27 10s. Strong conditions which have prevailed in insurance for some time were maintained. Rates dropped 6d to 43s for New Zealand Insurance on opening, and daily transactions followed at that level, Nationals, after a period of inactivity, advanced to 14s Bd, a rise of Bd, while South British were steady at 58s. Little business was done in loan and agency, an advance of 6d in GoldsbroughMorts to 25s 3d being the principal feature. Intermediate sections also produced few sales. New Zealand Breweries were in firmer reque»t and moved up Is 3d in a single transaction at 29s'6d. Another sharp ri§e in Colonial Sugars was the outstanding movement in general investments. Following a sale last Saturday 5s better at £46, dealing opened on Monday at £46 6s, with a further rise to £46 7s 6(1 on Tuesday. After two days, business again took place at the advanced price of £4B 10s, with holders asking £SO for more. Inquiry closed firm at £4B ss. Gear Meats also registered a substantial, rise in dealing at 35s 3d, and' Wilsons Cements recovered to 33s 3d. Australian Glass shaded from 39s 9d to 38s, at which price two parcels were secured. Renewed interest was displayed in Taranaki Oils < and several transactions accompanied a rise from 2s 4d to 2s 9d. The chief business in mining took place in Waihis, which again touched 17s, an appreciation of 3d. Other issues were in firm demand, but few supplies were secured. Blackwaters continued their upward movement, changing hands lOd better at 19s. Mount Lyells eased to 20s 6d, with a final recovery to last week's level of 21s. The following comparative table shows the levels of sales made at the re-opening of the Auckland Stock Exchange in January, together with the lowest price touched since and the closing sales of the last two weeks:— Jan. FRUIT VALUES STEADY A firming in the prices of some vegetables, notably cauliflower, was the principal feature of yesterday's sales at the

Auckland City Markets. Fruit values showed few alterations. The demand for apples was rather slower, while pears did not meet with keen competition. Grapefruit and lemons were still dull of sale, 6s a case being the top price realised for both fruits. Island oranges, however, sold fairly freely at late quotations. Repacked bananas were in shorter supply and realised improved values, 13oth hothouse and Cook Island tomatoes sold under keen competition, the latter snowing an increase of up to 4s a case. Cauliflowers, which sold at Tuesdays sale at from 6d to 2s a sack, were in much shorter supply, and prices rose sharply, 2s 6d being the minimum price and 6s 6d the maximum. O'uions, the scarcity of which had been relieved to some extent by shipments from Canada and Japan, firmed again. Cabbages, swede ; turnips, kumaras and rhubarb were in very heavy supply and the market was ' also fully stocked with celery, new pota- ' toes, green peas and Brussels sprouts. New 1 potatoes, however, under a steady demand, advanced about 3d a lb. There was little alteration in the poultry , market, the supplies being heavy and the demand fair. Eggs came forward in mod- ' erate quantities, but values remained the

same as last Tuesday, when an advance of Id took place. MANAWATU JERSEY SHOW The 10th Manawiitu Jersey Show and Sale, to be held at Palmerston North on September 29, has drawn a splendid entry of 98 bulls and 20 heifers.
