TRANSPORT OF GOODS
COMMERCIAL ROAD SERVICES FORMATION OF ALLIANCE [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thursday At the first genera] meeting of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance Mr. S. A. Goldingham, of Palmerston North, was elected chairman. The objects of the alliance ara for the protection of. commercial road transport in New Zealand.
Messrs. T. W. Hercock (Napier), J. B. Cullen (Ashburton), A. S. Baiiv (Auckland),. E. W. Harris (Kaikoura), S. A. Goldingham (Palmerston North), F. A. Hooker (New Plymouth) and J. Fabling (Wellington), wete appointed a council of seven to control the affairs of the alliance. Mr. J. Knight (Wellington) was appointed secretary and organiser. The Commissioner of Transport, Mr. J. S. Hunter, who attended the meeting, congratulated those present on organising as a national body, which could be of great benefit in placing the alliance's policy and views before the Government and in many other ways. He stated it was the department's intention to circulate proposals for the control of goods services as early as possible. The meeting decided that the system of control of goods services by licensing be approved. Tho council of the alliance waited on the acting-Minister of Transport, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, who assured the deputation that no action .would be taken to apply the provisions of (he Transport Licensing Act to goods services until the alliance had had a full opportunity to place its views before the Government. He promised that the Transport Department would extend every facility to cooperate in the problems with which the industry was faced.
