[by telegraph—press association] WELLINGTON, Thursday

Although she had been at sea ten hours, the steamer Tairoa, en route to London, put back on account of the finding of five stowaways. The men appeared in the Police Court Ihis morning, when the maximum penalty was sought, in view of the risk of fire when men indulged in smoking while hidden in cargo, and in view of the frequency oi; the offence.

Each man was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. They were:—Alan Carter, aged 21; Joseph Muldownie, 27; George Ernest Carter, 24; Charles Richard Griffiths, 22; Richard Knox, 22. Captain Kershaw explained to Mr. E.
