NEW CRICKET SEASON

IMPROVING THE STANDARD position of Senior b clubs LINKING UP WITH HIGHER GRADE With a view to improving the standard of cricket in Auckland the following motion was carried at' the annual meeting of delegates to the Auckland Cricket Association last evening:—"A junior club which enters and maintains in the prescribed manner a team in' the senior B grade shall have power to link its senior B team with a. senior club, and a senior club shall have power to accept such a linking subject to such conditions and restrictions as the management committee may from time" to time determine." Speaking to ■ the motion Mr. L. B. Schnauer said it was in the interests of cricket generally and was not put forward in the interest of any particular "club. It would bring players into prominence and they would be made to play where they should. The scheme was not perpetual and if it were not a success it could easily be dropped. He was sure it would be ill the interests of players. j Mr. A. Le Bhery (Point Chevalier) said the scheme at present was too vague. Mr. N. C. Sn.edden (Ponsonby) said the scheme was essentially a matter of cooperation. It would give younger players a chance of getting into senior cricket, which they would not otherwiser have. There were many points for adjustment, but, it waa only a trial and ho thought the management committee would help in every way possible. Mr. A. Winks (Papatoetoe) considered the scheme would not produce the results desired. It overlooked the individual who was more .concerned with the freer atmosphere of cricket. Players would not be forced to play senior A grade if they did not desire to. Although his club wc£ not in favour of the scheme it would give it whole-hearted support should it be passed. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet;. Mr. F. Earl, chairman, said it was very satisfactory tha,t there was a balance of assets over liabilities of £458 16s. However,, it had to be..remembered that on the aaseta side £506 lis 2d represented an investment in New Zealand Inscribed Stock and was earmarked for certain specific purposes. The association had hoped to wipe off a debit balance of .£153 Oa lid at the beginning of last season, but he regretted that owing to the poor showing of the representative team in. Plunket Shield matches the returns were not up to expectations. .The association's share from the two shield matches and the South African match was £l5O Us 2d. To carry on the good work' oi the English coaches. £IOB 3s 2d had beeu found for a coach ■ iund and as well as this registration fees had been reduced. and Country Week had been held for the first- time. Although _ the finances were not up to expectations tnere was no cause for alarm and the present debit balance now stood at £B7 8s Bd. It had to be borne in. mind that the Auckland team would tour the South this season Jind play games against Canterbury and Otago, and possibly Wellington, ; air though the association was tinder no obligation to play the Wellington match. Referring to the report, Mr. Earl stressed the importance of good practice an well as good match wickets in order j*> encourage the, younger cricketers. H® said players could not be expected to give their best unless the wickets and outfields were suitable. Mr. Earl congratulated the winners of the various competitions, and especially paid a tribute 'to C. F. W. All- , cott, who gained both the senior ' batting and - bowling averages last season. - '. - The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
