ART EXHIBITION

MR. A. C. HIPWELL'S WORK An exhibition of water colours, wood and lino-cuts, and other works is being held in the Auckland Society of Arts clubroom, Victoria Arcade, by Mr. A. C. Hipwell, of Auckland. In his small water-colour sketches, which predominate, Mr. Hipwell has been most successful in catching certain elusive but easily recognisable aspects of the Auckland isthmus, particularly its rolling clay hills, volcanic cones and creeks. The sketches are spirited little pieces of work and clouds and effects of light and atmosphere are capably handled in them. Industrial outdoor scenes are equally well done, and there are some excellent pencil drawings, especially two of the water-, front road. The lino, and wood-cuts include a number of imaginative studies of the figure, which also appears in some distinguished chalk drawings. A few etchings and oil sketches and a wood-block print in colours complete the collection. The exhibition was formally opened at a luncheon of the society yesterday by the president. Dr. E. B. Gunson, who congratulated Mr. Hipwell on the standard of the work shown. The presence of an artist such as Mr. Hipwell working in then) midst would be a distinct incentive to others present who were trying to capture something of the spirit gf Auckland and the New Zealand countryside.
