BONDSMAN REJECTED

ACTION BY MAGISTRATE REFUSAL TO ACCEPT SURETY " SAVOURS OF AMERICAN STYLE " "This savours too much of the American stylo of bail, and I will not accept it," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when David Goldwater, described as a financial agent, submitted himself as bondsman for £SOO bail for Ernest Cheadle, aged 30, carrier, who was charged with perjury. . After evidence against accused had been heard, counsel said Cheadle would plead not guilty. Ho was thereupon committed to the Supreme Court for trial. When counsel asked fos bail of £2OO to be renewed, Detective-Sergeant McHugh requested that the amount should be increased. "I will allow bail of £SOO, if he can get it," the magistrate said. In reply to a question by the magistrate, Mr. Mcllugh said accused was a single man, with no ties. The magistrate thereupon ordered that accused should report to the Northcote police daily while on bail. When the bondsman, David Goldwater, appeared, the magistrate asked if he was worth £SOO. Goldwater replied that he was. • "Do you know accused ?" Mr. Hunt asked Goldwater. "No, I do not know him," was the reply. "Very well, I ■will not take this surety," the magistrate said. "Goldwater, a moneylender, is merely offering as bondsman, for a consideration." Accused was remanded in custody.
