RED CROSS APPEAL RESPONSE IN THE SOUTH GIFT OF £IOO FROM MASTERTON An appeal in the interests of the residents of Wairoa who have suffered distress as a consequence of the east coast earthquake has been issued to Red Cross organisations throughout New Zealand by the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Mr. T. B, Kay, secretary to the Auckland Centre, has received the following telegram from the executive: "After a personal investigation at Wairoa by a member, tho Napier Red Cross executive has appealed through headquarters to all Red Cross centres for funds for the immediate use, particularly for crockery, of the sufferers." The appeal is to receive consideration.

RECONSTRUCTION WORK ACTIVITIES AT GISBORNE EMPLOYMENT FOR MANY MEN [BY TELEGRAPH—rRESS ASSOCIATION] GISBORNB, Tuesday Only one shock was experienced in Gisborne to-day, occurring at 7 o'clock this morning. Over 100 applications have been forwarded to the Unemployment Bureau for assistance in clearing debris, removing broken chimneys and replacing tanks. Over 200 relief workers are now engaged on rehabilitation work at private residences. Scaffolding is being erected outside various business premises and large buildings in Gladstone Road and reconstruction is in full swing. The clock tower on the chief post office which suffered a double fracture in the earthquake on Friday morning is considered so dangerous that demolition has been ordered, and this work starts early to morrow morning. All reasonable precautions have been taken at the Cook Hospital for the protection of life and property in the event of further earthquakes pending an inspection of the premises by the technical adviser to the Department of Health. When he made this intimation the secretary of the Hospital Board, Mr. C. A. Harris, stated that the board might be called together at an early date to consider the adviser's report. In the meantime 15 chimneys that appear to be unsafe will be demolished, and in order to save No. 5 ward one wall, .which suffered severe damage, has been strengthened by the erection of wooden supports, while a verandah adjoining it has also been supported.
