Ihe mission was at the beginning of 3Ej a new era. They were very fortunate in M having, in Captain Stanton, a man of H wide experience. Not only had he Jia<i||§ experience in the Islands, but also with Ij|| Sir Douglas Mawson's Antarctic expedilion. The commander of the old Southern Cross, Captain A. H. W. Burgess, wax a man with a splet did record, and they all appreciated his work. When their friends at Home decided to give themfei another ship they also claimed the right to appoint the captain, and had selected Captain Stanton. He was sure thev would endorse that selection. In the name of the mission and its friends he welcomed Captain Stanton to Auckland.
Captain Stanton said that although thai! new ship, in silhouette, was perhaps not « so, graceful and rakish as the old one. Bl he thought it would serve the mission usefully in every way. Unlike the last ! Southern Cross, it would be stationed in /, the Islands and would not make periodic calls at Auckland. He trusted that her absence from these shores would not 'I detract from the people's interest in th» mission. - 1
