MESSENGERS' WAGES
COMMONWEALTH SERVICE REDUCTIONS PROPOSED Savings estimated at £30,000 in the current year and £200,000 in the next five years are anticipated as the result of a, proposal by tho Australian Government to reduce the salaries of adult male messengers in the Commonwoalth Public Service.
Although tho Government gava instructions some time ago that these reductions were to be made, says tho Sydney Morning Hernld, that action was nullified by recent determinations by tho Commonwealth Public Service arbitrator upon applications made by the Amalgamated Postal Workers' Union and the Federated Public Service Association. The effect of these determinations has been to restore tho cuts. Parliament, however, has power to disallow tho determinations of the arbitrator, and this course is to be adopted.
