CHEAPER TRAM TRAVEL
CONCESSION ON SUNDAYS TICKETS FOR FAMILIES The issue of family concession tickets for uso on Sundays was authorised by the Transport Board at a meeting yesterday. A ticket, available for two adults and three children under the age of 15 years, is to be provided at a cost of 2s 6d for a period of three months, when the issue will be reviewed. The ticket will be available from eny outside terminus to the city, from the city to another terminus, and for the return trip on the day of issue. In reporting favourably on the proposal, the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, said that a ticket for 2s 6d represented a liberal concession and should be an inducement to families to travel to beaches and other recreation grounds which could be reached by tramcar. The present cost for families comprising two adults and three children from Onehunga to Point Chevalier and return was 7s, from Three Kings, Owairaka or Dominion Road to Point Chevalier 6s sd, from any two sections to Point Chevalier and return 5s 3d, and from Onehunga to a fourth section, such as Mount Albert, 5s lOd. The amount saved would vary from 4s 6d to 2s 9d in such cases.
Mr. E. H. Potter suggested that the concession should also be made available on Saturday afternoons, Mr. W. H. Nagle supporting the suggestion.
Mr. R. G. Clark said that on Saturdays there was extraordinary traffic to sports gatherings to be considered. " The idea is to bring the people on the cars on Sundays, when traffic is light," said the chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. who added that he did not wish to block the additional proposal, but would prefer to see it more fully considered.
It was decided to issue the tickets on Sunday only and to defer consideration of the Saturday pioposal.
