QUESTIONS OF STAFFING FILLING TWO CHAIRS f ENGLISH AND HISTORY Applications for the chairs of English and history at Auckland University College are to be called for next year by the college council. The chair of English has been held since 1894 by Professor C. W. Egerton, who recently consented to carry on his work until the end of 1933. The chair of history is at present vacant, and Mr. W. T. G. Airey is in charge of the department.

After a discussion in. committee at its meeting yesterday, the council adopted certain other recommendations by the education and finance committees with regard to staffing. It was decided, upon the report of the education committee, that the temporary full-time lectureship in history bo discontinued as from December 31 next, in accordance with the conditions of appointment, and that tho present lecturer in economics, Mr. F. B. Stephens, should devote half his timo next year to lecturing in the department of history and half to the dopartment of economics.

On the recommendation of the finance committeo, Dr. D. Brown was placed in charge of the department of physics during the sabbatical year's leave of Professor P. W. Burbidge, and Mr. L. G. Wilson was appointed to the department as temporary assistant. Mr. J. A. E. Mulgan was appointed corrector in English for 1933, on the recommendation of Professor Egerton. It was reported that a donation of £2OO for tho medical library had been received from the British Medical Association and one of £lO. 10s for the economics and accountancy library from the Commerce Students' Association. An application from the Students' Association for the renewal of its tenancy of the students' block and dining hall was granted, the president, Sir George Fowlds, stating that the arrangement had proved perfectly satisfactory.
