AUCKLAND B TEAM BEATEN

MATCH AGAINST WHANGAREI

Tho representative Rugby match between Auckland B and Whangarei was played at Rugby Park yesterday afternoon in tho presence of about IGOO spectators, nnd it resulted in a win for Whangarei by 23 points to 15. The woathor was brilliantly fnio and warm, and tho ground was hard as the result of continued dry weather. Tho game waß not as interesting from a spectator's vjewpoint as was expected, although tho several brilliant passing boutß by tho Auckland backs delighted tho onlookers.

Whangarei was very strong in tho forward division, and endeavoured to make tho game a forward ono, while the visitors took every opportunity to open up play for thoir hacks. Tho local forwards, who wero heavier than thoir opponeuts, wore superior in line-out and 6crum work and also in loose rushes, while the visiting backa outehono their opponents, handling tho ball accurately and kicking with good judgment. Goal-kicking was the deciding factor of tho game, _J. Hamilton being rosponsiblo for 30 points on this account, whereas Auckland failed to convert ono of its five tries. For the (visitors tries wero obtained by Tetley (2), Smith (2) and Carter. Tries for Whangarei were scored by Pickering (2.) and Collins, all being converted by J. Hamilton. A penalty goal was kioked by Pickering, and J. Hamilton potted a goal. Tho moat conspicuous of the visiting forwards were Short, Brown nnd Carter. The backs were a good combination, an.d all played well, the most prominent being Conway, Smith, Tetley and Matheson. Auckland obtained possession on the lineout, tho ball being passed to Smith.. who scored at the corner. Tho try was not converted. Immediately after kicking off an Auckland player was penalised for offside, and Pickering kicked a magnificent goal from near half-wnv. the ball hitting the bar and going over. Rika obtained the ball on tho line-out, passed to J. Hamilton, who landed a splendid goal from a. difficult angle. From a loose rush J. Hamilton obtained possession, passing to Collins, who had no difficulty in scoring a try, which J. Hamilton converted. Shortly afterwards J. Hamilton cross-kicked to Collins, who short punted, Pickering following up fast, obtained possession and scored between the posts. J. Hamilton converted. From a lineout, the ball passed between Tetley, Clarke, Matheson and Smith, the last-named scoring a fine try which was not converted. The ball went from another line-out to Smith and Matheson, thence to Tetley. who scored, but the trv was not converted. The game ended: Whangarei, 22; Auckland, 15. Mr. D. MoLeod was referee.
