RUGBY FOOTBALL

BLACKWOOD SHIELD MATCH " DIOMEDE DEFEATS DUNEDIN MARGIN OF FOURTEEN POINTS Tho match between* learns representing H.M.S. Diomede, holders, and H.M.S. Dunedin for tho Blackwood Shield, played as a curtain-raiser to the representative fixture at Eden Park on Saturday, resulted in a win for Diomede by 14 points to 0. The winners displayed hotter combination as a team, the backs being seen in some good passing bouts, while tho Diomede forwards were alsio superior, especially in the loose. At times the pace was exceptionally fast and the match, which was bright throughout, was thoroughly enjoyed by the spectators. Both teams put plenty of dash into their play, the tackling also being of a high standard.

.Diomede attacked strongly from the kick off and from a scrum on the lino the ball went out on the blind side, where Weekes touched down wide out. Woodham failed with the kick. Diomedo was hooking the ball in the scrums and the forwards were playing with dash in the loose. The first time the Dunedin backs set off Ralph missed his pass, enabling Diomede to break through. Brookbanks led Dunedin in a strong rush which went half the length of the field, a force resulting. A poor kick by Roper had Dunedin in trouble, close play following near the line. Here from a scrum Weekes passed to Frew, who cut through well, but was held up. Good passing by the Dunedin backs looked promising until Thomas knocked on. Again Diomede pressed strongly, Fitzgerald being narrowly beaten for the touch dawn. Diomede held the advantage for a time, but the Dunedin forwards, aided by good kicking by the backs, gradually drove back. From the twenty-five Somerville made t, good attempt at goal from a penalty. Diomede was not long in retaliating and this time its efforts were rewarded when McKean dashed over from a scrum.

Woodham converted with a good kick. Stirred by the reverse, Dunedin made "strenuous efforts to score, Whiteman once just failing after a solo dribbling effort. A minute before half-time Fitzgerald made a brilliant swerving run right through the opposition from halfway and scored between the posts. Woodham's kick hit the crossbar. At the interval the score was.—Diomede, 11; Dunedin, 0. On resuming both sides attempted to • use their backs, but mishandling spoiled the movements. Fast play followed, neither teain being able to drive home any advantage. Playing better in the loose, the Diomede forwards rushed to the twenty-fivo, where from a passing bout Ansley scored well out. Woodham failed with the kick. Dunedin lost one or two chances through lack of finish, but generally Diomede held the upper hand. McKean led the Diomede forwards in a good rush and Ansley went close to scoring, being pushed out at the corner. Ralph intercepted cleverly in a Diomede back attack, but had no support and a good clianca was lost. There was no further scoring, the game ending:—Diomede, 14; Dunemn, 0. . Mr. H. C.
