amateur championship ROBERTS DEFEATS MASSEY Tho Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship for the Billiards, Limited, Shield, was continued on Saturday evening at Messrs. Billiards, Limited, Showrooms, E. V. Roberts, holder of the shield, defeating H. A. Massey. The game attracted a large gathering, including several ladies. Massey had tho better of tho game at the outset, scoring more frequently than the ehield-holder, who was very much out of touch. A break of 26 by Massey gave him the lead at 100 to 69. Roberts gave a glimpse of his form in an all-round break of 39, making the score 112—all. The scoring was of an even nature at this stage of the game with Roberts making a run of 27. Massey, however, was more consistent, and led at 209 to 187. Roberts played brilliantly in all-round breaks of 33 and 75, being unfortunate 111 misjudging a nursery cannon in the latter break, when he seemed sure to reach the century mark. Theso breaks gave him a lead for the first time in the same. He was playing up to his best form now and two cues later be made a break of 49. The scores at this stago were 361 to 248 in favour of Roberts. Massey earned applause for excellent individual shots. lie was playing a good uphill game, and fought hard to reduce the leeway. A break of 27 gave him a possible chance of recovery. Roberts, however, displayed rare form in making a splendid break of 62, and gained the remaining few points soon afterwards. The final scores wore:—E. V. Roberts, 500; breaks, 39, 27. 38, 75. 49. 22 and 62: H. A. Massey, 373; breaks, 2G, 20, 20, 27 and 20. " „ _ W. E. Hanket will ploy L. G.
