THEFT CHARGES ADMITTED "PARTICULARLY MEAN ACT" " It is a particularly mean act to steal from a sick woman," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday, when Hazel Ivy Kite, aged 40, pleaded guilty to charges of stealing a gold brooch, clothing and £1 4s in money, to a total value of £6 8s sd, from another woman, and a watch valued at £5, the property of T. W. Whittle. Detectivo-Sergeant T. Kelly said accused had pawned the watch and later told tho police that she had found it in Newton. With regard to the other charge, accused had called on a woman, who was ill in bed, and had offered to clean up the hous«s if she could stay the night. The woman went to sleep and accused stole the various articles, later pawning them and giving a false name. " This woman has not been before the Court for some time," Mr. Kelly added. " However, she has a sturdy list of-con-victions, involving dishonesty." Counsel for accused said she had been experiencing difficulty for some time and had yielded to sudden temptation. Sho had not been in trouble for over a year. Tho female probation officer, Major Gordon, also said it was a case in which accused might be given a chance. The magistrate admitted Kite to probation for two years.
