SALARY REDUCTION

OFFER BY EMPLOYEES DECLINED BY COUNCIL The Municipal Council at Mosman, Sydney, has decided not to accept an offer by certain members of the indoor staff to undergo an 8 l-3rd per cent reduction in salary below the basic wage. It was pointed out by a member that if the offer was accepted, and if any of those employees were dismissed, the council might be prosecuted for underpaying its officers and ordered to pay a fine of £SO in each case. Another member said the offer purported to be voluntary but pressure had been "brought to bear on the employees.

A third alderman said that economies must be effected. The only alternative seemed to be rationing or dismissals.
