OPEN FISH MARKET

REQUEST TO MINISTER GOVERNMENT AID SOUGHT Government assistance in establishing an open market system of selling fish in Auckland was sought by a deputation which waited upon the Hon. R. Masters, Minister of Industries and Commerce, on Saturday. The deputation, which claimed to represent the fishing industry of the Auckland Province, was headed by Mr, A. M. Samuel, M.P. for Thames, Mr. S. Ensor, Mayor of Thames, and Mr. N. Wells, of Mercury Bay. Mr. Samuel said the fishing industry was at present suffering from the depression. As thero was no place where the surplus fish could be disposed of, much of it was thrown overboard. The industry wished to establish an open market, as in Wellington and other centres, where the fish could bo sold to dealers or the public. It was stated by members of the deputation that the industry was willing to pledge its securities to establish an open market, but no money for building purposes was available. The old municipal market site had been acquired and it was hoped that a grant for building purposes could be arranged. The Minister said he would consider the representations and he also agreed to examine further the possibilities of establishing overseas markets for the industry.
