ILLEGAL USE OF HORSES WARNING TO YOUNG MEN [from our own correspondent] NORFOLK ISLAND, Aug. 22 Many a good horse has been spoiled on Norfolk Island through being caught at night by larrikins, sometimes "doublebanked," and galloped up hill and down dale until its wind was broken, and tho horso "foundered." Constable Fellowes, a lover of horses, is determined to put a stop to the cruel practice. Two young Islanders were before the Court recently charged with illegally using horses. Constable Fellowes pointed out the seriousness of the offence. Under ono section of tho law, lie said, offenders were liable to a lino of £IOO, or 12 months' imprisonment. The defendants were dismissed with a severe caution, on their paying costs. The rainy season is drawing to a close. It visually finishes in September. There has been more continuous rain this season than for many years past. Tho benefit to tho island is very great. Many of the visitors, however, have execrated, in unmeasured terms, tho rain, tho earthen toads, which quickly become muddy, the absence of footpaths, the want of street lamps, etc., etc. But, as tho islanders say, "We can do without the visitors, but we can't do without the rain."
Tho fourth anniversary of tlio Norfolk Island corps of Girl Unities was celebrated by a birliulay party, at which tbo president, ]\lrs. T. E. Adams, presided. The Administrator, Captain 0. R. Pinney, and Mrs. Pinney, were present. Tho flag recently procured by the corps from England was presented by Mrs. Pinney. Miss Moira Pinnoy was initiated a member of the corps. Senior members of tho Girl Guides Corps may volunteer their services to the hospital for one month. During that time tho girls live at the institution. In return for their services they are initiated into the rudiments of hospital management and nursing. The board provides a small amount of "pin money." An Association football club has been formed on the island. Hitherto Rugby has been tho only football codo in vogue hero.
