amateur CHAMPIONSHIP ROBERTS DEFEATS BROWN The Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship for the Billiards. Linjited. Shield was continued last evening at Messrs. Billiards, Limited, showrooms, when E. V. Roberts, holder of tlio shield, defeated F. L. Brown. The match attracted a large gathering. Roberts eoon found touch and ran up to 29 before failing. Brown improved on this eoon after by a nicely-played break of 30 by all-round methods. Roberts was seen to advantage and after losing the white ball, .carried on arul made a red-ball break of G7. Brown earned applause for some nicely-executed all-round cannons. He was scoring with consistency and added a break of 22. ' Roberts, who was playing his usual fine game, added a break of 30 and at the halfway mark had a lead of 100 points. Roberts' next break of note was an all-round effort of 50, when he failed over ail easy cannon. Brown, who was playing a good uphill game against his more experienced opponent, showed up in a nico all-round break of 34. Roberts continued to maintain his load and further all-round breaks of 27 and 30 resulted from his cue. lie placed the issue beyond doubt soon after with a splendid break of 70. The final scores were:—E. V. Roberts. 500: breaks, 29. 07. 30. 50, 27. 30. 70: t. L. Brown. 301: breaks. 30, 22. 34. 20. M. D.
