Somerville, winners of the Davis Cup this year, defeated North Shore, last year's champion team, by five goals to two in a game full of incident, St. Luke's, after a fairly even first half against Mount Eden, took control of the game in the final stages nnd won by five goals to one. North Shoro was first to score and would have won tho game but for tho bril- t liant play of tho two Watts brothers. Glan- t ville and Seccombe led the Somervillo attack from the opening bully, and North Shore's circle was invaded, Allen saving, r Somervillo was quickly back to the attack < and a great chance was lost in the circle. f Kiff was seen in a speedy dash which was t blocked by Smith, who sent the Somerville van away. E. Watts and C. Watis outstripped tho opposition, but control of tho t ball was lost. Again Kit! broke away. An- * thony carrying the movement on. Moons, s was ready, but he did not got the'ball out 1 of the circle and Kiff beat Vailo with a J clever falling shot. Right from Iho bully v the Somervillo van advanced, and E. Walts, i at tho conclusion of a spectacular solo run 1< for a third the length of the field, tricked S Rankin and sent the ball into tho corner a of tho net, equalising the score. A. Anthony showed nice stick-work in an advance which penetrated the Somervillo circle, but j the defence held. The Watts brothers worked ; hard in a series of attacks, Rankin saving j a shot by C. Watts. After a temporary j counter-attack, led by_McKenzic and An- j thony, Somerville again penetrated tho North Shoro circle, E. Watts finishing off with a tricky shot. North Shore had a lucky escape a few moments later when Rankin mado two good saves in Quick succession. Tlio rebound of his blockago of E. Watts' shot was taken by Crlanvillo, but again Rankin was in position. The spell ended with tho score: —Somerville, 2; North 1 Shore, 3. . I Gurr sent Seccombe away at tho opening { - of the second half, and after a fast run the ball was swung into the centre. C. Watts turning it into the net. Right from ( the bully E. Watts broke away, and, after r a typical run, shot, the ball goi.ng into the net off Rankin's stick. North Shoro attacked strongly, but offside play spoiled t a promising advance. Kiff and Wilson wero 1 working hard, .Somerville being besieged for ( some minutes until E. Watts again broko clear and beat tho opposition to score Somerville's fifth goal. In the last few t minutes of the gamo North Shore attacked ( strongly. From melee. Fleet found tho net, but he had kicked tho ball. A moment later Sweeney also sent tho ball into the net, but gave "sticks." North Shoto kepi up ] the pressure, and finally Wilson goaled, tho j game ending a moment later with the score:. , —Somerville, 5; North Shore, 2. Messrs. A. Williams and G. Peace were referees. ■ i WIN FOR ST. LUKE'S ; SECOND SPELL IMPROVEMENT ! After a ragged first spell, in which opportunities were lost by both side. 4 ?, St. Luke s took control of tlie second half -against Mount Eden and won by five goals to one. Play was even for tho' first few minutes, both forward lines carrying out fast movements. Clark and Jansen invaded St. Luke s circle, and from a penalty corner Carson j was called on to save. St. Luke a retail- j ated, aud after a strong attack Brown, tak- t ing a rebound from Oliver's pads, opened j St Luke's score. Up and down pluy followed, St. Luke's winning territorial honours, but the defence lines were too strong for the forwards and the spell ended j without further score. . Shortly after the opening of tho second spell St. Luke's was given a great chanco when Brown was awarded a penalty bully for obstruction almost in the goalmouth. Oliver, however, bullied successfully, and Fletcher broke away. Offside play nullified his efforts, the ball returning to Mount Eden's territory. Two shots from cornels went wide, but finally Robertson seized an opportunity and netted St. Luke s second goal. J. Horspool was seen in a speedy flank rush which beat Dafley and Clark, but his clover centre was blocked by \\ it- t liams who sent the St. Luke s van away on a'counter-attack. The Mount Eden goal was besieged for some time, the final lines of defence carrying out splendid work ' Oliver made a great save of a direct shot by N. Burnett, but he was slightly insured, and Vipond, taking the rebound, sent tho bnll fast into the net. Grace led a fiuthcr attack down the field .and centred to IS. Burnett, whose shot missed. Horspool and tToVkoti shifted play to the other end of the* field and 'following close play m the circle Clarke opened Mount Eden s score.
