FALCON CUP CONTESTS

SECOND SERIES OF MATCHES ABEL'S DEFEATS NORTH SHORE The second series of games in the Auckland Football Association's knock-out competition for tho Falcon Cup was played on Saturday in ideal conditions. Thistle gained the decision in the game against Onehunga, but there was no scoro in the match be--1 tween Glen Innes and Ponsonby, after extra timo had been played. Abel's surprised North Shore at the Domain by a clear-cut win, and Y.M.C.A. had no difficulty in eliminating Tramurewa. Following were the results:— Y.M.C.A., 5; Tramurewa, 1. Thistle, 5; Onehunga, 4. Ponsonby, 0; Glen Innes, 0. Abel's, 2; North Shore, 0. GLEN INNES AND PONSONBY DRAW AFTER EXTRA TIME In a very poor game at Blandford Park s in which extra time was necessary. Glen ; Innes and Ponsonby failed to reach a definite decision, there being no goal scored i in the two hours' play. Glen Innes swung i the ball about determinedly, but met with ■ a stalwart defence from Stewart and Potts. Play was decidedly haphazard, neither team displaying form expected of senior comi binations. Defence was the strongest fea--1 ture of the game. Innes dropped in a ■ good shot, which had the Glen Innes goal--1 keeper worried. There was no score at the i interval. j Tho second epell was productive of very , little better football, in spite pf the fine ad- . vantages offered by the fast ground and t dry ball. Hitchens arid R. Welch appeared dangerous occasionally for Glen Innes, but j were well held and then Innes, of Ponsonby, i dropped over a series of fine centres, which should havo been improved upon. There j was no score at time, and although an extra . half-hour was played, no definite decision was reached. ' Mr. G. Allen was referee. Y.M.C.A.'S EASY WIN TRAMUREWA ELIMINATED Y.M.C.A. experienced no difficulty in eliminating Tramurewa at the Domain in a • very poor contest. Y.M.C.A. was clearly superior and it was not long before Bell netted. He scored again a few minutes later. Tramurewa came strongly in reply [ and J. Hunter made an opening for Polwin, who scored. Two more goals followed . for Y.M.C.A., Christie scoring the first and the second being a rebound off a defender. The score at the spell was:—Y.M.C.A., 4; Tramurewa, 1. Y.M.C.A., with its three goals' margin, did not exert itself seriously in the second spell. Bell scored again after a brief period. Y.M.C.A., taking advantage of its superiorj ity, repeatedly reshuffled its team to the finish, the players changing places in the I forward, half and back lines. The final score a . was:—Y.M.C.A., 5; Tramurewa, 1. r Mr. J. Calvert was referee. A PAST DISPLAY THISTLE DEFEATS ONEHUNGA A fast and exciting match was witnessed ■_ when Thistle and Onehunga met at Walker Park, the former gaining the decision in a high-scoring game. Onehunga was the first to take (lie offensive, the ball moving rapidly and accurately among the forwards in a manner which troubled the Thistle defence. Gerrard handled and anticipated well in the Thistle goal and kept the attackers at bay, and in a quick counter Williamson got through to place Thistle in the lead. Onehunga soon retaliated and Gill scored with a good shot. Thistle again took the j lead when Williamson registered, but just 3 prior to the spell Gill brought Onehunga - level with a nico shot. The half-time score r was:—Onehunga, 2; Thistle, 2. I Shortly after the resumption *an Onehunga ehock raid tore tho Thistle defence 0 to ribbons and Woodhall finished off the move with a fine drive, which beat Ger- ' rard. Maintaining the .pressure Onehunga 3 further enhanced its chanccß with a penalty " kick successfully taken by Gill." F. Zuill was II forced to retire at this stage, Buffering from ® a back injury. Cumraings reduced Thistle's deficit with a long-range shot. Another ' penalty kick to Onehunga was taken by Gill, but the ball hit the post. The pace increased over the closing stages, both g teams contesting every inch of ground. s Cnmmings added two more fino goals before the finish to give his side victory, tho final j ecote being:—Thistle, 5; Onelnmga, 4. Mr. B. Rickard was referee.

SURPRISE BY ABEL'S MARGIN OF TWO GOALS In a same which revealed little football of a good standard, Abel's, a weond grade team, decisively defeated North Slujre a the Domain. Abel's win was all the more creditable as several, members of the team played in. an early championship game against North Shore's second grade team. Abel's, with a following wind, gave North Shore defence a hard time. North bhoie fought back and the ball was eent about in mid-field for a period, neither forward line showing much Penetration. A misunderstanding between the North Shore hacks and the goalkeeper saw Abel a take the lead, the ball just dribbling, into the net. Play was v/ell contested to the spell, when the score was:—Abel's, 1: Isorth Shore. 0. In the early second half exchanges Abel « was again dominant, Gerrard and Hart beinpf hard pressed to etem the attacks. Blackie made several attempts to wipe off the deficit, but received little support. Hewlett showed up in a fine individual effort, which culminated when he placed Abel s two goals in the lead. North Shore attacked strongly until the finish, the game ending with the score:—Abel's, 2; North Shore, 0. Mr. R. H. Parfitt \vas referee.
