REWARD OF KINDNESS
SAVING A RACEHORSE INTENDED FOR DESTRUCTOR GOOD SAMARITAN'S LUCK A handsome reward for saving a racehorse from destruction is being reaped by the owner of the hurdler, Nine of Spades, who twice ran second at the Otago Hunt Club's meeting in Dunedin on Saturday. As lie had not won a race since July, 1928, and was thought to have outlived his usefulness, Nine of Spades was some months ago sent, to boiling-down works in South Canterbury. An employee, who took pity on him, became his owner on paying the cost of freight to the works, a matter of less than £2. In the last month Nine of Spades has won £152 in stakes, with three seconds and one victory, the latter being second in the Spreydon Hurdles at Riccarton, in which there was only one other starter. Early in his career Nine of Spades raced in* the North Island and his most important win was recorded in the Awapuni Handicap in 1926, when after finishing second to Royal Damon, the positions were reversed, owing to interference and the race was awarded to him. He is now 11 years old.
