NEEDY EX-SOLDIERS

CANTEEN FUND GRANTS HIGHER ALLOCATION WELCOMED Unemployed cx-service men will benefit. considerably by the decision of the N.Z.E.F. Canteen and Regimental Funds Trust Board to increaso its monthly grant of £IOOO for the relief of unemployment to £ISOO for a period of six months, commencing on September 1. The secretary of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr. 11. J. Aekins, said on Saturday that the grant was distributed among Iho various district associations, tho allocations being in accordance with -the number of cases of distress dealt with in each centre. As a result of the increase m the, grant, tho associations would havo a little more money to spend in alleviating distress. Much good work was being accomplished by tho Auckland Association in assisting needy ex-soldiers, and any additional sum received from tho Caneon Fund would bo well spent. Mr. Aekins added that the medical club recently formed by his association for the purpose of providing freo medical aid to financial members, their wives and children, was proving of great benefit to many who could not afford tho services of a doctor.
