BEECH TIMBER TRADE
HOPES OF ENGLISH ORDER OPTIMISM IN THE SOUTH DELEGATES FOR ENGLAND [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL. Tuesday A large gathering of timber millers tendered a farewell this afternoon to Mr. G. Bauchop who, with Mr. J. R. Entrican, State forest products engineer, leaves by the Tamaroa for England on Saturday to conclude, if possible, negotiations entered into with an English firm for the supply of 'a large quantity of beech timber for motor-body building. Almost all the sawmilling interest in Southland were represented and millers from Otago were also present to wish success to the important mission.
"There is justification for our feeling that at no previous time have prospects been so bright for an impetus being Riven to the sawmilling industry of Otago and Southland," said Mr. D. J. Wesney, who presided. "We all hope the order will be secured and that it will be but a forerunner of prosperous business for the millers and increased employment for the timber workers. It is not so much the question of money as of the re-estab-lishment of the industry."
Mr. W. Grieve, who dealt principally with the use of beech for motor-body building, said he felt sure that if representations were made to Sir William Morris by tho delegation he would give every consideration to tho use of beech in his factories.
The conservator of State forests, Mr. N. J. Dolamore, assured the millers of his department's interest and co-opora-tion.
