TRAINING HELD UP

HEAVY FROST AT RICCARTON LITTLE SCHOOLING DONE : MATU'S DASHING DISPLAY [by telegraph—own con respondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday A large crowd of onlookers assembled at Riccnrtcn this morning in tlio expectation of witnessing some schooling over tho main steeplechase fences and also tho semi-final gallops on tho course proper, but for tho first time in history on tho cvo of a prand National meeting training operations wero practically abandoned owing to the frozen nature of the ground which, in the absence of any influence from tho sun, did not showsigns of thawing until close on mid-day. Several trainers early gave up the idea of working their horses and sent them on tho ronds, while ft few braved tho elements as soon as tho surface softened to any extent. Some of tho steeplechaso candidates wero scheduled to school over tho main fences but tho course proper was considered unsatisfactory, especially along tho back stretch, and the only jumping that took place was that allotted Matu over the insido schooling course. Ridden by his Grand National pilot, J. Kerr, ho gave a dashing' display over eight fences. Ho probably has never looked better than at present. Ho has had a. fiolid preparation and will have further opportunities of getting moro wind-ing-up work in tho next four days. Conditions having improved in the afternoon Okapua (A. Skipper) and Nylotis (V. Langford) wero sent a round of the big fences. Both went well throughout, with Okapua, probably giving the moro attractive display. Paliu (M. Nicol) negotiated a round of hurdles at a steady pace. Ho has gone on tho right way since racing so well at Trentliam and more stake money may go to him at next week's gathering. Morena (E. Mackie) and Full Measure (L. Dulieu) were companions in a similar task, Morena making much the better showing. Full Measure has been suffering from soreness since racing last Saturday. Morena did not show any signs of the- trouble which prevented his appearance at Washdyke. Dainty Ways (H. Turner) gave another dashing exhibition over four hurdles. High Pitch, Taramoa and Paris were to have been associated in a task over the course proper, which was open for schooling for the last time to-day, but the arrangement was icalled off owing to tho frozen ground and the trio executed a strong working gallop over a mile. Muff ran six furlongs in 1.19 2-5, Riri, with Karaka over the last part, ran seven furlongs in 1.32 1-5. Palantua covered six furlongs in 1.20 1-5. Nightguard, Hurlingham. Water Polo and Sam Smith ran half a mile in 525, lianelagh doing a similar distance alone. . ...... Arrowmir outpaced Irish Chieftain over five ftulongii in 1.4. Elude ran six furlongs. Kational 11, joining him for the last five furlongs, which they ran in 1.5. Bavin© rain seven furlongs in 1.36 2-5. Don Jose, assisted by Pixie Gold over tho last half-mile, ran six furlongs in 1:18 4-5. Locksley traversed a similar distance in 1.21 2-5, Robin Hood assisting him over the early stages. A number of other horses worked on the course proper without being galloped seriously, while others did strong pace work on the grass circuit outside the schooling hurdles. One result of to-day's easy day is that there may be a lot of galloping tomorrow. TRACK WORK AT EPSOM CARNUI'S DOUBLE TASK PEDLAR SHOWS IMPROVEMENT BY ABAYDOS There wan a good deal of useful work at Epsom yesterday, when the dirt track was in good order. The footing was fast, but a strong breeze militated somewhat against the times. Carnui (F. J. Smith) was given a double task. After running a mije and o-half easily in 3.40 ho set off asain on a similar journey. With hall ii miie covered in 1.15, Explosion (W. Clifton), who had previously worked a useful mite and a-half, joined issue, going away in front and sotting a solid pace. Explosion still luid an advantage at the finish, his mile taking 2.21, whiie Carnui's time was a shade faster. Pedlar (L. Laver) and Rolfe Audubon (A. J. Julian) were responsible for the fastest half-mile of the morning. They went from tne mile and a-quarter post, i'edlar at once taking charge. As they reached the six fur- : longs peg in 1.52 2-5, ltoiie Audubon was i handy and forced the pace over tha final section, ltolfe Audubon caught Pedlar 100 yards from the finish, but the novice hung i on gamely and the pair finished on» terms, ; the last half showing 1.7. Dad's Hope (W. Clifton), after running three furlongs, was picked up by Guid Hairst (F. J. Smith), and after traversing a sound circuit increased the speed over the noxt half. Both paced freely to record 1.10. Continuing for an extra auarter-mile. Dad's Hope registered 345, while Guid Hairst completed another half-mile, in 1.9 1-5. Moko Girl (W. Dye) and Nellota (L. Mitchell) ran the last mile of three circuits in 2.25. Moko Girl trotted boldly until 50 yards from the post, where ehe left her feet, allowing Nellota, who had paced well all the way, to finish on terms. The last half was run "Realty (E. S. Groat) worked a steady mile and then stepped briskly over six furlongs at a 2.20 -mile gait. Although well bandaged,' Realty showed no sign of soreness after his good effort. Carl Mack (L Morrison) worked a mile and a-half in 3.44, but the time would have been much, better if he had not broken badly in the early stages. With three lapses, Carl Mack trotted the first mile in 2.34. and maintaining a correct gait over tho final section, registered 1.10. After trailing Oliver Thorpe (J. Schaafe) for the first mile of a sohcily-run mile and a-quarter. Nathaniel (W. WiHetts) finished very atromdy in the concluding etajsca to finish on terms, They ran the first bix furlongs in 1.47 2-5, coming home the last haltmile in 1.8. Both horses put plenty of dash into their effort. Little Guy (P. J- Smith) ran tho first half of a mile work-out at a fast clip, registering 1.8, but .waa steadied over the next section, to finish up the task easily in 2.20 J. Little Guy paced boldly and is fast ossuming racing shape. Weo Machine (E. S. Groat) gave an impressive display of free-legged pacing. After traversing a couple of rounds at a Bteady gait ho stepped over a milo in 2.30, running the final half in 1.12. , Cleao (A. Hendnksen), unhoppled, was not asked for speed while negotiating several rounds. She is in excellent heart to undertake solid work. , . Marble Star (R. Millen) trotted in fine style over several circuits. lio was allowed to sprint over separate quarters and displayed a good turn of speed, lie should soon be at his best again. Kewpie's Triumph (K. Bell) travelled over two miles comfortably, but there was no speed on for tho first part of tho journey. The last milo was run in 2.24}, tho final half in I.IOJ. Kewpie's Triumph, who is a very lazy worker, could have done a lot better with a companion. . La Triumph (J. Shaw) gave a fine exhibition of trotting over several laps, showing rare speed when allowed to step along fast over occasional furlongs. La Triumph looks like turning out very useful " kept to the trotting gait. . On the Hand track Parrish Belle (A ; G. Pillenger) trotted solidly over a long journey. She pulled hard and appeared fumous to turn on the price. . Commodate Jack (I. Morrison). Peter Drift (T. Carlyon) and tho Nelson Bingcn— Great Audubon mare three-year-old (P. Morrison) did useful work on tho sand, tho last-named shaping very p e.isingly. Later, on tho dirt track, Commodore Jack trotted three circuits at a sound gait without bcin„ sent agaiiißt the watch.
