THE ASTELIA

By LUCY FYERS. Rangiriri Tho astelia is a perching plant, something liko tho kiekie, except that tho kickio has roots in tho ground and the has not. Few peoplo realise how beautiful it is. Tho flowers, which como about February or March, aro lovely. They aro long fingers of tiny golden flowers, coming out of a silver sheath and drooping gracefully from tho midst of rich green spear-like leaves. Tho bees love these flowers, which havo a sweet honey scent. When tho flowers aro gono tho berries' come. The silver sheath turns brown and each little flower changes to a berry. As tho year grows old the berries change from green to yellow and from yellow to red. This plant is very easy to grow in tho garden, if you find ono growing on a stump or log..and move it whole. Just prop it up in a suitable spot and it will grow aud flower as it does in tho bush.
