EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALO The following are extract.'? from the New" Zealand Herald of JulSy 29, 1882 >— His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is a model chairman and does not allow himself to be put up for any institution the management of which he is not thoroughly well satisfied with. Having recently had a servant of his in the London Fever Hospital, His Royal Highness consented very cheeriully to preside at a special dinner on behalf of this charity, and he immediately asked if he could see over the whole establishment to satisfy himself as to its working. The directors, not caring to take upon themselves, the responsibility of conducting the Heir to the Throne through scarlet fever and typhoid wards, suggested that a substi tute might be found in His Royal High ness' physician, and Sir William Gull ac cordingly was deputed to visit the hos pital and report to the Prince. The Dunedin Telephone Exchange, which was started with 60 subscribers, has now 113. An experiment has been tried by tht South London Tramway Company, by which it is proposed to illuminate their cars by gas, instead of oil lamps, as at present, by a small box or holder placed under the seat at one end of each car and by means of two small pipes running along the outside. The experiment proved successful.
