WEST COAST ACTIVITIES MANY COMPANIES INTERESTED The stimulating effect which the high price of gold is having upon the mining industry is well reflected in the increased activities on the West Coast of the South Island. The operations of a number of new ventures were reviewed by the Christchurch Press this week. The Golden Sands Company, a sluicing enterprise in tho Barrytown district, is expected to comtnenco active mining operations by tho end of September or early October. Tho major part (;f tlio capital is held in Christchurch. Tho Molynoux electric dredge, which operated on the Molyueux River about 20 years ago, is being dismantled for removal to the Gillespie's Beach claim, in South Westland. It is expected that the Brian Boru dredge will be operating actively within a month. Substantial quantities of gold were won in this area in tho early days. Most of the capital is held on the Coast and in Wellington. A commencement is being made with tho dismantling of a dredge in Waikaka Valley (Southland), and another in Central Otago, for removal to Murchison to work a claim on the Mataki River. The Snowy River Company is accepting tenders for the constrjction of tho waterrace to its claim. The work will be let in sections in order to expedite completion. The New Zealand Mining Investment Company has completed, for a Christchurch syndicate, the boring of a claim on the Blackball Creek, the results being satisfactory. Tho company's plant is commencing this week to drill the South Beach, south of Greymouth. Rich returns were secured on the alluvial flats in this vicinity in the early days, tho famous Golconda load running through the district. The area is within a few miles of Greymouth. An area of 3000 acres of alluvial ground in'tho Okarito district, held by an Auckland syndicate, has been submitted to mining interests. If the Home interests aro favourable, extended prospecting will bo undertaken.
